Ideas on various lessons that I teach my children: What is success? -
traditional answer = top10% -
how do you prepare for being the other 90%? -
success, beauty, power, ... - what is relevant to a genuinely fulfilling life?
- what community to establish?
-
how to make everyone a member of the community? Children's learning is a BrainStorm session:
- Daniel was upset last night because I corrected him in his essay.
- Children are learning in a stage much like the brainstorming session of a business strategy meeting. In the early stages they are desperately seeking ideas. Correction is bad.
- Only offer them advice or correction if they seek it. Otherwise, treat their results as would in brainstorm session: leave everything out as possibilities. That is how creativity grows.
Ideas for HXNY class: - Strategy and tactics for Life : scenarios
- design/pattern/wisdom that occusr in life
- what makes us human, vs machines
- spend time to focus on human side, excel in our relative advantage, let automatable things be done by machine
e.g.. derivatives and integrals should be done by mathematica
- Fermi question, heuristics, common sense (but no t so common)
- Strategies for various life dilemma
- how to grow communities, Web2.0, collaboration, organization
- Fun things (with Physics, in 1-lesson), only to illlustrate my theories
- philosophies:
- blind man on elephant emphasizes one aspect, leads to argument
- how to differentiate them, comparative religioun
- reject and avoid cults
- find God and experience Him.
- know the limits of science
- math, physics, beauty of nature and understanding
- pursue them to the degree of beauty
- survey all ideas, but avoid over-deep involvement, until your job
- Geometry in 1 lesson. idea of symmetry.
Life Lessons
- Lessons I teach my children
- (not the academic referenced versions, but the direct crux I offer my children, at the levels that they understand.)
- wisdom, heuristics, proverbs, quotes, jokes, that I personally experienced
Mind the main thing.
- apply to managing one's time, money, career, family, faith, etc
- prioritize
- significant vs urgent
- tactics: divert your enemies' attention
- trick people into chasing after small coupons, when larger gains are at stake
- do we merely satisfy, or optimize
Wary of Slippery Slope
- The frog that stays inside the slowly heated pot
- rather than drastic reaction, we settle for less due to slow conditioning
- desensitized by decaying morality or mediocrity of social attitude
- Any time that we are being reduce to something less than our full potential by our environment
- lotus: coming out of the grime but not be tainted
Whatever you belittle will be your archilles heel
- ideas, people, or aspects of your humanity that you ignore or look down upon will come back to cause your downfall
- speckle and plank theory
- this should cause us to be humble, respecting everything that exists, for they all have reason for their existence
- when we belittle something, it is a likely reflection that we are lacking in that area, and therefore not able to realize its importance, and likely not giving sufficient weight and consideration. Chances are, when randomness strikes, at those areas that we lack, we fall.
- applications: I have been taught in an environment of academic elitism, looking down on practical work, trade, business, trickery to get ahead, hacks toward the system and society, ... even in relationships, sexuality, etc
- Even now working in business world, I have look down on business methodologies, eg project management, critical analysis, etc. Thinking them too simplistic for my high minded
Seeking simplicity and meaning Ancient chinese, greek, etc, yearn for knowledge of the universe, desire simplicity, knowability, predictability, order, explanation, -> categorization
Chinese: 5 elements, hierarchy, 1 AAA, 2 BBB, 3 CCC, ... 7 GGG. cannot handle continuum of possibiilities
Current society, capitalism, seek niche, opportunity arises in cracks of unacknowledged possibilities, the chaos and unpredictables, that lies outside order and expectation.
i.e. Categorical vs empirical
- theoretical vs empirical
- idealistic vs realistic
- algorithm vs data
- assume known and static, vs embrace the unknown and that which falls outside knowledgee
- Black Swan concept
- Ancients have an inclination toward the orderly universe, viewing the world through such simplistic categories.
Fast, Good, Cheap, pick any 2. The realm of business is to demand good professional service and products timely, at a premium price. Essentially, What people demand, are staisfied by the lure of compensation.
Cheap: Hobby, social organization This is in contrast to nonprofit orgs, church, etc, where price is not the valuation, but the emphassis is on free and quality service, but at the expense of speed. Essentially we use our free time annd piece toether what everyone can contribute on their schedule, to offer services at a weekly rate.
For those activities that demand speed, only a few people can do it, so the service is low in reliability of offering, i.e. even if it is good, you have no guarantee that you will receive it.
This lesson is really an indication of the limited resources:
- Fast = time = how many people can offer the service
- Good = quality = reliability = how many experts, how much qualifying material
- Cheap = price = market indicator of the demand vs supply
