Essence of the Chinese Soul   PDF
Written by Wei-Jing Zhu
To build up a vibrant Chinese community, we need to identify some shared activities that we are passionate about.  To that effect, I like to ask you all: what is the essence of the Chinese soul?  What makes us and our children Chinese?

Please use the comment tool below to provide your ideas.  Thanks.

difference between tradition, culture, h

The most straight-forward biological answer, of being the children of Chinese parent(s), is not too enlightening.

Certainly there are traditions that we follow, the way we celebrate certain days of the year, to remind us of our history (the good and triumphant part would be our heritage).

We also differentiate by our culture: arts, literature, language, music, and other achievements, whether in arts, science, etc.

But while many of these can be learned or adopted, what would be the defining essence of a Chinese soul?

Old men sitting in the shade playing mahjong, just as they would have for 1000 yrs, just as two of the nine immortals crossing the sea played with each other in the statue in the Huanghelou. People selling peanuts on the street. The sweet sentiment of Yu Boya... and remembering this story 2,500 yrs ago as if it were just this morning, as if he's only just stepped out. Flowers torn and scattered on the graves of loved ones, mingled with words. Good food. Worrying if your kids will come out OK.
